What do you wear during a photo shoot?

Clothing Tips That Always Work!

Your outfit is one of the first things you think about when a family photo shoot is coming up. And rightly so, because your clothing plays a part in setting the mood of the photos. Still, choosing what to wear doesn’t have to be a source of stress. In this blog post, I’ll give you practical tips to help you effortlessly put together outfits that make everyone feel comfortable and look great together as a whole.

Here are a few helpful tips for choosing clothes for you and your family.

Choose a color palette, not a uniform

You don't all have to wear exactly the same thing or the same color. In fact, that often looks very "90s." (And think about how zebras defend themselves in the wild.)

It's better to choose a palette of a few colors that go well together, and vary within that palette. For example, opt for natural tones, pastel shades, or perhaps more boho-inspired hues.

Choose a color palette instead of a single color. Above are three examples of color palettes, but be sure to pick the one that suits you best.

Think of soft, natural shades such as dusty pink, sand, olive green, and off-white. This way, the family comes together as a whole without feeling forced.

Be mindful of busy prints and large logos

Play with layers and accessories

Choose based on the location and the season

Start with one outfit

Here's a handy tip: first, choose one family member's outfit that you really like, and coordinate the rest around it. Often, that's the outfit with the most colors or the most texture. This way, you avoid endlessly second-guessing yourself and immediately have a direction to follow.

A few more practical things

Keep your shoes in mind, because they stand out more than you might think. And bring a spare set for young children, because we’re bound to get dirty anyway. Are you bringing a hat or cap? Don’t put it on just yet; that way, your hair will still look good when we start the shoot.

Most importantly: wear something you feel comfortable in

If you don't feel comfortable in your clothes, it will show in the photo. So choose something that lets you move freely and that reflects who you are. This is especially true for children. Pants that itch or shoes that pinch are guaranteed to cause grumbling.

Are you still unsure about what to wear for your photo shoot? Feel free to send me a message with a photo of what you have in mind, and I'll help you figure it out. That way, you'll be relaxed and look your best in front of the camera.
